Shapla Summer Dress
The Shapla pleated summer dress is made from upcycled hand loomed sarees from Bangladesh. The pleated panel is inspired by the folds of the saree. The lower section of the dress is hand embroidered, following the tradition of Nakshi Kantha.
In the olden days women in rural villages used to gift blankets made from worn out sarees and lungis embroidered all over to keep the layers together and to narrate a story to dream with when sleeping. Nakshi Kantha used to be priceless as they could not be bought but only gifted.
We decided to illustrate characters from Bengali poetry: birds, flowers, fruits to show you the flora and fauna of this country and prevent it from extinction. 10% of the cost of this dress will be donated for this cause.
